WITCH, SPIRIT, DEVIL : An anthology of writings on witchcraft compiled by A.F. Scott
Belief in withcraft in Europe was born towards the end of the Middle or 'Dark' ages. It flourished in many parts of the Continent as in England in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, and the satanic flame has still not died.
WITCH, SPIRIT, DEVIL is a fascinating anthology taken from a host of contemporary books and manuscripts. It presents an unparallelled, often horrific insight into the nature of witchcraft — the Black Art derived from the Devil — and its impact on men and women of every social class and frame of mind. Ranging back to the Old Testament and forward to our own century, represented by the extraordinary story of the happenings at Borley Rectory, the quoted texts give a fuller account of witchcraft than numerous commentaries which have appeared in recent years. Black witches, white witches, poltergeists — all take their place in the macabre tableau. The prime enemy is the Christian Church.
These quotations, never before collected together, are presented in the same style as in A.F. Scott's Eye-Witness series of English Social History, of which the first volume, THE STUART AGE, has recently been published. The numerous illustrations have been selected from old books and museums across the world.
A.F. Scott is a graduate of Cambridge University in English and History. He was successively Senior English Master at Oakham and Taunton; Headmaster of Kettering Grammar School; Senior English lecturer at Borough Road College London; also Examiner in English, and University Teacher of London University.
His books, appearing over a period of nearly forty years, cover many aspects of English language and literature. Widely known, they have sold over seven million copies.
Now a full-time author, Mr. Scott specializes in far-ranging studies of social history from contemporary sources.
Sir John Wolfenden has recently said:
'Arthur Scott is an anthologist of taste, experience, and rare judgment. His books combine, in an unusual degree, scholarship with readability.'
