EARLY PROSE AND POETRY
Professor Collins has collected in this volume sixteen poems, eighteen surprising pen-and-ink drawings, and several prose pieces, including Landing in Luck, Faulkner's first work of fiction, which he wrote between 1917 and 1925 for University of Mississippi publications and for a New Orleans literary magazine. Faulkner studied at the university for only just over a year; for the rest of the period he was the postmaster there.
This collection is of tremendous interest, not only because of Faulkner's later stature as a writer (winner of the Nobel Prize), but also because it illustrates his statement that he set out to be a poet, and shows how in his early years he was aware of the best writing of his time.
