The Ponder Heart
"Miss Welty is a happy writer," as The New York Times Book Review has said, . . . In being utterly familiar with her material, in having great quantities of it at her disposal, and especially happy, even triumphant, in her mastery of selection and presentation." The Ponder Heart is one of Eudora Welty's happiest books, and Uncle Daniel Ponder, who was "good as gold" ("if he ever did a thing to be sorry for, it was more than he ever intended") , one of her most triumphant creations.
The trouble with Uncle Daniel was that he was not only generous, he was rich as Croesus, as he said himself, and when he got started giving away, his own niece Edna Earle couldn't stop him. He even tried to give away his own cemetery lot, once. When he couldn't "treat" Intrepid Elsie Fleming, the motorcycle rider at the Fair, and when his first marriage to Miss Teacake Magee didn't work out, he wanted to get married again in order to have someone close by to give things to. And so Uncle Daniel took another wife, seventeen-year-old Bonnie Dee Peacock, a little thing from the country who could make change and cut hair, but who looked as though a good gust of wind might carry her off. Something like that did happen to her, in time, and Uncle Daniel found himself being tried for murder in the Clay Courthouse.
The Ponder heart amazed everyone on that occasion; and readers will be amazed and delighted at the comic genius and warmth of characterization in Eudora Welty's new book.
