The Crime of Giovanni Venturi
...marks the debut of an exciting and original new talent on the American scene.

Howard Shaw is thirty-six years of age and presently a foreign service officer stationed in Rome. After service in the Air Force in World War II he was graduated from William and Mary College, and did graduate, work in languages and literature at the universities of Harvard, Strasbourg, and Grenoble. During the past fourteen years he has lived principally in Mexico, France, and Italy.
Mr. Shaw writes: "My romance with the Etruscans has persisted for seven years — longer than most romances. La Rochefoucauld would have said — and I have assembled a collection of relics of no monetary value and little aesthetic interest. My pastimes are skiing, skin diving, and pub crawling in the Alban Hills. I write in a sixteenth-century chapel in my house in Rome, and I have been influenced most by Jonathan Swift, Moliere, and Graham Greene."
