The Black Symbol

When Barney ran away to search for his father in the mining camps around Virginia City, he had no idea of what was ahead. Plunging through the blizzard, in terrible haste to get away from his unkind cousins, Barney saw only luck in being picked up and offered a job in Dr. Cathcart's Traveling Miracle Show. But when Barney learned that his work would consist of caring for Steve, the silent, sullen, blind strong man, his misgivings began.

Barney clung desperately to the truth as he saw it. It was hard for him to see reality under sham, and to learn that the printed word was not always the true one. It was difficult for a young boy, alone and often afraid, to 'learn that cruelty can masquerade as kindness, and that wisdom may be branded insanity.

This is a distinguished and exciting book. It is rich in background and characterization. Barneys maturity is hard-won, and boys and girls alike will recognize this book as a milestone in their reading.

About the Authors

THE BLACK SYMBOL is the first book for young people on which Edgar and Annabel Johnson have collaborated.

Annabel Johnson was born in Kansas City, Missouri, and studied at the College of William and Mary in Virginia and at the Art Students League in New York City. Her husband, Edgar Johnson, was born in Washoe, Montana, and attended schools in Montana as well as the Kansas City Art Institute and the Art Students League.

The Johnsons were married in 1949, and after living for some time in New York City they took to the open road. They travel about the western states, camping out and writing, hunting, and fishing.

THE BLACK SYMBOL was written in the very locations in which the action takes place.
