THE ADVENTURES OF RINALDO
by Isabella Holt
with illustrations by Erik Blegvad
Here are all the ingredients of a classic fairy tale: knights, tournaments, deeds of valor and chivalry, beautiful ladies and wicked villains. But this is no common tale of knights and ladies, for Rinaldo is a most uncommon knight. His armor is rusted, he wears his fortune in jewels sewed into his patched red flannel underwear, and he is not very young nor very handsome.
But the wars are over and Rinaldo is looking for a castle. He rides astride the great horse Wingfoot, followed by a troop of performing animals: Edward the pig, Arthur the stag, a host of trained rabbits, and dozens of other creatures.
After a series of unusual adventures, Rinaldo finds his castle, but not before he acquires a barefoot lady named Daffodil for his bride. After the animals are settled in, and the castle repaired — for it was quite run down — Rinaldo is called away to save his old commander, the valiant Colonel Gorchy, now a captive of the bandit Grumius. How Rinaldo goes forth with no aid but that of the faithful Wingfoot, and three young lads named Tom, Dick, and Harry, makes unusual, funny, and suspenseful reading.
Erik Blegvad has done black and white drawings with the same rare humor and gusto with which Miss Holt tells THE ADVENTURES OF RINALDO.
Isabella Holt is the author of several successful novels for adults. And most important, she is a mother and a grandmother. Rinaldo came into being when she created this knight — not too unlike one Don Quixote — to entertain her own children at bedtime. After her children were grown, Rinaldo was in demand among her grandchildren. Since the grandchildren are widespread across the country, Rinaldo was put onto paper, because his adventures are far too humorous and well written not to be shared with boys and girls everywhere. They appear now in book form as THE ADVENTURES OF RINALDO.
Erik Blegvad is no newcomer to children's books. He has illustrated many of them, always with distinction and care that the drawings be exactly suited to the text. He makes his home in Westport, Connecticut.
