Here the reader will find such famous stories as "Tonio Kroger" and "Tristan," written while Dr. Mann was still in his twenties, and yet they are indisputable "stories of mature genius"; the novelette "Death in Venice," which Mr. Fadiman calls "surely the most beautiful long short story ever written"; "Disorder and Early Sorrow," in which, says Mr. Fadiman, "the terrible pulse of the German inflation beats through a narrative that is on the surface a tender, muted story about little child's ephemeral grief"; the popular "A Man and His Dog," one of the finest of modern dog stories; and "Mario and the Magician" which "contrives to be an examination into the freedom of the will, a reflection upon the nature of human tyranny. . . . While there is no word of politics in the tale and not a sentence that endeavors to change our ideas about anything, it is nevertheless the most searching indictment of current domination-ideals penned in our time."
Many of these stories have not heretofore appeared in English, and some have been published in less felicitous versions than the masterly renderings of Mrs. Lowe. Now Mrs. Lowe is responsible for the entire English text and the volume contains everything written by Thomas Mann with the exception of his novels and essays. He has, moreover, contributed a valuable and informing preface.
