Being marked for death on one world wasn't enough for Stile. Hardly had he escaped assassination on the science-oriented world of Proton than he found himself on Phaze, a world of magic, where some power was also bent on eliminating him.

On Proton the Citizens used science to gain fabulous riches. But Stile was only a serf, amusing his master by his prowess as a jockey in the Games that dominated the society. He was a master Gamesman-until a laser shot ruined his knee. Then he just managed to escape death with the aid of Sheen, a loyal and loving robot, who showed him the "curtain" through which he could flee.

The curtain led to the magic world of Phaze, where Stile soon learned that his double on this world had been murdered and that some power was now trying to eliminate him. Needing help, he tried to tame a unicorn, though he was hardly a virgin. But after a ride wilder and more dangerous than ever tried before, he managed to gain her loyalty. Neysa, the unicorn, took him to the Oracle, which could only advise him to know himself. Apparently, on this world he was an Adept-a master magician

Joined by a friendly werewolf. Stile and Neysa set about trying to ascertain just which Adept he was supposed to be. But every meeting with an Adept was at the risk of his life, and his only escape was back to Proton.

Whichever world he was on, Stile's life was not easy. On Proton, he had to do what seemed impossible with no time in which to do it On Phaze, he could only save himself by using magic-but if he did, werewolves and unicorns were set to destroy him.

Only Piers Anthony could devise such a richly complex story, joining forever the two worlds of science fiction and fantasy.
