CZESLAW MILOSZ
Selected Poems
INTRODUCED BY KENNETH REXROTH

This selection of poetry by Czeslaw Milosz spans a period of several decades, including poems written in Nazi-occupied Warsaw, but with emphasis on the work of recent times. Milosz's writing is critical, wholly contemporary, and deeply influenced by his past and present linguistic, geographic, and political homes, yet he is always careful to avoid the dangers of a style that is too personal. "His poetry . . . has a subtlety and a profundity that come from an intensely humane literary sensibility, a remarkable understanding of the complexity of the human mind and its speech and a breadth of experience unusual in contemporary writers."—From the Introduction by Kenneth Rexroth.

Czeslaw Milosz was born in Lithuania on June 30, 1911, and was educated both in his homeland and in France. During the Second World War he was a member of the Polish underground, and after the war joined the new Polish government's diplomatic service. In 1951 he criticized the regime and sought political asylum in the West. He is currently professor of Slavic languages at the University of California, Berkeley.

Milosz is the author of a number of books, including The Captive Mind, Native Realm: A Search for Self-Definition, and The History of Polish Literature. Editor and translator of the anthology Postwar Polish Poetry, he is also the translator into Polish of French, English, and American poetry, including that of Walt Whitman and T. S. Eliot. His own poetry has been translated into eight languages.
