Selected Letters of CICERO
THE COLLECTION of Cicero's Letters here reproduced in Latin with an introduction and notes is intended to be as representative as possible of the whole collection which has descended to mod-ern times. Necessarily, in the 315 pages a choice has had to be made between almost equal candidates for inclusion. But present-day students will find the list adequate for their purposes.
The collection is rich in the letters Cicero wrote to the members of his family and friends. They throw important light upon his private character, his tastes, his daily life, and his relations with his personal and literary friends. A sufficient number of letters bearing upon political matters have been included to present a good outline of Cicero's public life and the life of his times. The arrangement of the letters is chronological.
Professor Abbott's introduction and commentary discuss the characteristics of epistolary and colloquial Latin, though no attempt has been made to give an exhaustive statement in this regard. Notes bearing upon these problems appear at appropriate points in the text.
Professor Abbott's work was first produced at the turn of the century, but nothing in the intervening years has vitiated his general approach. The book is therefore as useful today as when an earlier generation of young Latinists began its study.
FRANK FROST ABBOTT was professor of Latin in the University of Chicago. His book had been out of print for a number of years when the Committee on Classical Textbooks of the American Philological Association advanced it for republication in the University of Oklahoma Press classics program.
