Harold M. Groden, M.D.

To a universal problem beset by misunderstanding and confusion especially within his own church, the author brings light and clarification, in addition to explaining his research-developed concept of ovulation regulation. At a time in history when communication is almost instantaneous, and what was once considered history now becomes the news of the day, the torrent of misinformation, presumption, and pronouncements from unknowledgeable sources has left in its wake the bewildered layman, the indecisive priest, and the helplessly permissive physician.

Dr. Groden has in this book directed his efforts towards this most perplexing and disconcerting situation in non-technical language. As has ever been the case new ideas and concepts have been greeted with skepticism and rejection. This is the history of mankind. His approach to the problem and his proffered contribution offers to the married couple what is both licit and effective. In no sense is he suggesting that improved, morally acceptable programs will not be forthcoming. Indeed, he is extending his work with the fervid hope that this goal may be attained.

Dr. Groden occupies the unique position as not only being a specialist in Obstetrics and Gynecology, but one who has devoted his professional life in the study and teaching of subjects relating to moral problems confronting the physician. At no time nor in any instance have his judgments in areas of moral theology pertaining to his specialty been criticized at any ecclesiastical level.

It is his prayerful wish that in these pages some degree of hope in regard to family planning may be realized by those whose problems pertain to this facet of life.

HAROLD MICHAEL GRODEN, M.D. received his AB pre-medical from Boston College and his M.D. from Tufts College Medical School. He served his internships at St. Margaret's and the Cambridge City Hospitals and his residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Boston City Hospital. In 1943 he enlisted in the Army and was assigned to the Air Force as an obstetrician and gynecologist. Following his separation from the service in 1946 he took a course in Pathology at the Free Hospital for Women. He is a diplomate of the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology. His past and present hospital affiliations include the Boston City, Cambridge City, Mt. Auburn, Sancta Maria, New England, St. Elizabeth's, St. Margaret's, Newton-Wellesley, and Norwood Hospitals.

He is married to the former Helen E. Perrault of Brockton, and resides at the Lewis Farm in Walpole, Mass. in a rambling colonial of indeterminate vintage with thirteen of their fifteen children (two are married).
While at Boston College "Hank" Groden played right wing on the hockey team under the dean of coaches John "Snooks" Kelly. During the summers of college and medical school he was the ice-man in Green Harbor, Mass., when he was known as "Dr. Iceman." He has written a collection of stories under this title which will be published soon, and these should arouse considerable nostalgia in old Green Harborites.
