from the collection of Peter C. Asbjornsen and Jorgen Moe. Illustrated by Erik Werenskiold and Theodor Kittelsen. Translated by Pat Shaw Iver-sen and Carl Norman.

Ever since they first appeared in translation, more than a hundred years ago, the Norwegian folk tales collected by Peter Asbjornsen and Jorgen Moe have maintained unrivaled popularity among English-speaking children and their elders on both sides of the Atlantic.

Now, in a spirited new translation by an American Fulbright scholar and a devoted Norwegian folklorist, thirty-five of these matchless tales are presented, with the original illustrations by Erik Werenskiold and Theodor Kittelsen.

These two artists, working closely with Ashjornsen and Moe, expressed in their drawings the very essence of mood and feeling in the stories themselves. Witches, trolls, and ogres; sly foxes and great bears; romantic princesses and country-lads-turned-heroes are all here, as alive in the pictures as in the imagination and tradition of the Norwegian people.

Some of the stories are long, full of action and satisfying events; some are brief, and pointed. All of them are told in this English version with the same pithy directness of their oral telling, long ago, by family firesides and at social gatherings in villages and country places through the whole of Norway. New generations of children will delight in these ageless tales, and in the pictures that make visible the authentic character of the people who live in them, and the true nature of their setting, their fantasy and their fun.
