Moominpappa at Sea
Written and illustrated by TOVE JANSSON
Translated by KINGSLEY HART
The Moomin family at home in Moominvalley are restless. Moominpappa is sad because he feels that, with the family and their friends growing up, they are no longer so dependent on him. This makes him feel unwanted and so he decides to take the family to sea in the Adventure. Away from their familiar surroundings Moominpappa hopes they will once again turn to him for advice and help in their daily problems.
The lonely island with its lighthouse which they reach provides the background for this new volume in the Moominsaga. It is a mysterious place and at times an eerie one. But the Moomins settle down to live there. Moominpappa spends much of the time observing the sea; he admires its tremendous power. Moominmamma paints pictures of Moominvalley on the lighthouse walls. Moomintroll has adventures with sea-horses and with the Groke, who so wants to be his friend. Only Little My is completely unperturbed by the strange surroundings.
Here is possibly the most sophisticated of the Moomin books to date; a beautifully told and intriguing story, once again superbly illustrated by the author.
