MISS LONELY HEARTS by Nathanael West

The name of Nathanael West is known to comparatively few American readers. When he died, in an automobile crash in 1940 at the age of 36, he had published only two important books. Yet the chances seem good that West's reputation will grow with the years and that he will assume a sure, if necessarily minor, place among The small group of novelists of his generation who wrote ' 'literature ' and not just books for sale.

West's strength was his really profound originality, his gift for enfiguring the life of his Time in fictional forms that were both novel and apt. This is especially True of Miss Lonelyhearts where the story of a newspaperman who becomes enmeshed in the fa+e of the human derelicts who write Jeffers to his agony column fakes on a kind of savage, satiric poetry, with symbolic overtones.

Malcolm Cowley says of the book: "Miss Lonelyhearts had brilliance, but if also had honest tenderness, a sense of the author's personality, and a reckless freedom of imagination—qualified that are even rarer today than when it was first published. It is one of The books that had very few readers for The firs+ edition, but simply refuse to be forgotten.
