Le Corbusier's buildings, projects, and writings form a body of work that, more than any other, has influenced the course of modern architecture and town-planning. Although Le Corbusier created highly diverse forms, his work possesses an extraordinary unity; all his architecture is centered on the concept of "true measure", which humanizes the proliferating chaos of modern cities and gives unity and harmony to the world of forms by relating it to the human scale. Among his key contributions was the development of the Modulor, a system of proportion for architectural design based on the proportions of the human body, and the list of technical ideas he pioneered—slab structures, pylons, sunscreens-— could be extended almost indefinitely.
Based on two earlier books edited by Boesiger, Le Corbusier 1910—1965 and The Complete Architectural Works of Le Corbusier, this volume fulfills Le Corbusier's own wish for a moderately priced study of his work. It surveys and illustrates in photographs, plans, and sketches a large selection of the architect's principal creations, including the early revolutionary Savoie House at Poissy and the Swiss Pavilion at the Cite Universitaire in Paris, the large-scale housing projects in Marseilles, the French Embassy in Brasilia, and the Carpenter Center for the Visual Arts at Harvard University. The major projects of this master of modern architecture are also fully illustrated and documented.
The text includes summaries of Le Corbusier's theories in the architect's own words, as well as extracts from his diaries, conversations, and letters. It is supplemented by a biography and a complete index of projects.
THE EDITOR: Willy Boesiger is a Swiss architect who has long been recognized as an outstanding authority on the work of Le Corbusier. In addition to his research and writing on the great French architect, he has edited Richard Neutra: Buildings and Projects.
