GOGGLES! Story and pictures by EZRA JACK KEATS

Peter has found a pair lensless motorcycle goggles, He and Archie are on their way to sit on Archie's steps and enjoy their treasure. But the big boys have other ideas.

In order to tell it like it is, Ezra Jack spent months sketching and photographing city streets and city children. In pictures that seem Ato focus a spotlight on each scene as it unfolds, and in strong, spare this fifth book about Peter brilliantly portrays the world of a small child big city.

As a child in Brooklyn, Ezra Jack Keats had his share of experiences with the bullies on his block. His memories, and his acute observations Of life in New York City today fuse to create the reality Of Peter and his world.

In 1963 Mr. Keats received the Caldecott Medal for The Snowy Day. He is the author/illustrator of such immensely popular books as John Henry, Jennie's Hat, God is in the Mountain, and Peter's Chair. He is also the illustrator of The Little Drummer Boy, words and music by Katherine Davis, Henry Onorati and Harry Simeone, and In the Park by Esther Hautzig, as well as many other distinguished picture books.

Among Mr. Keats's numerous artist honors is his selection in 1965 as a contributing artist to UNICEF Christmas cards. And in 1967 he was the guest of honor of the Empress of Iran at the International Children's Film Festival in Teheran.
