Designing Corporate Symbols

A good corporate symbol doesn't Just appear from nowhere. It takes a great deal of time, thought, and research to create a symbol which will accurately portray the personality and function of a company.

There is a story behind every good corporate mark. For example a leading watch manufacturer needed a symbol that at once: identifies the company, relates visually to a watchface, possesses an elegant form to fit the Jewelry market, and, finally, reduces cleanly to sizes as small ELS l/16th of an inch for watch dial faces. The solution is startling in its simplicity, yet answers each one of these demands.

Here are 148 outstanding corporate symbols, each one with the story of its creation. What ideas were the designer and the client trying to get across? What specific limitations were they working with? Designing Corporate Symbols presents these problems and their visual answers, the symbols themselves.
