"Suddenly the whole area was lighted up with a dull red and she could see mountains of coral and rock, huge caves and deep chasms, with towering pinnacles and minarets of alabaster. Despite all its strangeness, it was beautiful. On every side were strange plants of rainbow colors, and beautiful fish of all shapes and sizes . . ."

Set against the colors and sounds of the underwater, DEAR DOLPHIN is fantasy at its best. It describes the adventures of a girl named Ann who is searching for the 'Lost Atlantis.' Along the way, a witty dolphin, who is her constant companion, introduces her to a philosophical sea serpent, a chatty manatee, a captive dugong, a scholarly lobster, and—to that villain of all villains, Captain Teach of the pirate ship The School.

Herbert A. Kenny is a graduate of Boston College and has been a newspaperman since 1933, first as a reporter with the Boston Post and later as an editorial writer with the Boston Globe. Since 1961 he has been editor for the arts and book editor for the Globe. Mr. Kenny was a Robert Frost Fellow in Poetry at the Bread Loaf Writer's Conference in 1956. He is the author of TWELVE BIRDS and SUBURBAN MAN, which are collections of his poems. The Kennys live in Manchesterby-the-Sea, Massachusetts.

Kelly Oechsli writes, "I did all of my 'atmospheric research' for DEAR DOLPHIN at the Acadia National Park in Maine last August—above sea level— at the 'intertidal zone' to be exact." Among the children's books he has illustrated are THE HUNTING OF THE SNARK, THE PLAID PEACOCK, THE DRAGON's HANDBOOK, and PIPER, PIPE THAT SONG AGAIN. Mr. and Mrs. Oechsli and their four children live in Hawthorne, New York.
