Chicago : J.J. Depre, 2011. Paperback. 104 pages : illustrations ; 28 cm. Brand New.
For the past few years, Joseph J. Depre has been traveling around the world photographing and writing about street art. Upon returning to his hometown of Chicago, he was inspired to author a book based on the current scene. The result is Chicago Street Art. Separating the genre from its roots in graffiti, Depre clearly and passionately explains his perspective and interest in a cultural tracing of Street Art. Working with four other photographers, the book is a photo documentary and serves as an overview of the overlooked but vital arts scene that appears and disappears on the streets of Chicago.
Part history lesson, part field guide, part cultural insider wisdom, Chicago Street Art is offered as a legitimate pictorial text that moves the Street Art practice into the position as an important cultural marker distinctive to a specific city and time. It features six short essays from Depre, as well as quotes and more than 200 color images from artists and photographers of the Chicago Street Art community.
