CHAMPIONS DON'T CRY
by NAN GILBERT Pictures by PAUL FRAME

Thirteen-year-old Sally Barrett is determined to become a tennis champion but refuses to discipline herself enough to correct the serious faults in her game. Sally is thrilled when she learns that she has qualified to play in a large tournament in a faraway city. To earn the necessary money, most of her summer is spent baby sitting and housekeeping— not always entirely successfully.

At the tournament, Sally had bad luck. Her meager money goes too fast, her opponents don't show up, her only racket breaks, and her always-present confidence deserts her. But she emerges a champion in far different ways than she ever dreamed being a champion entailed.

This is an exuberant story of a young girl's determination to succeed. Young readers who are equally determined to succeed in fields of their own will find understanding and humor in Sally's experiences.

About the author

Nan Gilbert, explaining how she came to write CHAMPIONS DON'T CRY, says, "How could it not be written—with our family's total of hours in competitive sports? Games mean much to us, not only for the fun of playing them, but for the spirit that becomes part of them. . ."

Mildred Gilbertson, who writes under the name of Nan Gilbert, lives in Eugene, Oregon, with her husband. They have two children.
Mrs. Gilbertson has written advertising copy and is the author of almost five hun-dred short stories. She plans to devote much of her time to more books for young people.

About the artist
