A Leisurely Guide Book
by William Zuill
Illustrated by Scott White
The land of the coral and the deep blue sea is again coming into its own after the lean war years. Tourists are going back to Bermuda in ever-increasing numbers as transportation is provided. In spite of air travel most Americans will continue to reach Bermuda by ship, and what more pleasant and instructive book could they read on board than Bermuda Journey, a book which fills a real need. There are glamorous books about Bermuda; there are none which give facts—except Bermuda Journey, a leisurely guidebook written by one of the island's most substantial citizens. The book is divided into sections and chapters in a geographical fashion, constituting a literary tour of the Bermuda Islands. The tour begins in Hamilton and Pembroke and thence to the Eastern Parishes by way of the North Shore Road to Flatts. You travel on the South Road to Tucker's Town and around Harrington Sound to St. George's and the islands of St. George's Harbour; to St. David's Island and the islands of Castle Harbour. You start on your tour of the Western Parishes by the Harbour Road to Riddle's Bay, travelling farther on the South Road from Paget to Southampton, the Middle Road through Paget and Warwick, along Riddle's Bay to Somerset Bridge and the islands of Somerset, Watford, Boaz, and Ireland, around the islands of the Great Sound, and the reefs. There are numerous maps and an index for the convenience of both the actual and merely the reading tourist, and, for the delight of both, attractive black and white drawings by Scott White throughout the book.
