AN ICE-CREAM WAR
On the eve of World War I, the British were supremely confident—unaware that their empire would never be the same again. In his new novel, William Boyd portrays a little-known but decisive action of the war—the fighting in the East Africa colonies. At the center of a large cast of characters, British, German, American and African, are two English brothers, Gabriel and Felix, whose lives become as fragmented as the empire they both, eventually, defend. Although separated by distance and events, the brothers are bound by their ambivalent emotions toward the war, their love for one another, and—most poignantly—their love for one woman, Gabriel's wife.
Erupting from an obscure colonial conflict, this totally absorbing novel speaks to us powerfully of the human condition and the substance of all our lives. In An Ice-Cream War, William Boyd has written an intense and dramatic story, flashing with irony. He has brilliantly fulfilled the promise of his first novel, A Good Man in Africa, which won the Whitbread, the Somerset Maugham and the John Llewellyn Rhys awards. An Ice-Cream War was nominated for the Booker prize for fiction, the most prestigious British literary award, and was a national bestseller in England.
William Boyd was born in Ghana, West Africa, and educated at the Gordonstoun School, the universities of Nice and Glasgow, and Jesus College, Oxford University. He is currently a lecturer in English Literature at Oxford University and a regular reviewer for the London Sunday Times and the London Times Literary Supplement. He lives in Oxford with his wife, Susan.
