ACROSS 110th
by WALLY FERRIS

In a dim, guarded room of a Harlem tenement, a stout white man had just opened a suitcase on a table. The men (both black and white) around him were watching closely as he began to count the bundles of money lying on the table. There was a knock on the door and one of the guards warned, "It's two cops!"

"Take it easy," the stout man said in a low tone. He motioned to the guards to put their guns away. "Okay, let them in," he said, realizing it was too late to hide the money.

The men who came in were black—and armed

"Christ, this is going to be some night," said a young detective, who arrived at the building much later. And the precinct captain when he saw the place said, "I'm going to need every man on the squad."

But it was Frank Sullivan and his black partner, Bill Pope, who were given the main responsibility for the case.

"I think this was a local affair," the precinct captain told them. "This was no hit or miss. It had to be plotted." And he added to Sullivan, "And, Frank, any methods you use, I'll back you." He and Sullivan exchanged glances, and then Sullivan nodded, acknowledging the authority he had been given.

It had all started, probably, across the Hudson, in a palatial house atop the Palisades, where an old Mafioso had decided to teach the black criminal boss of Harlem a lesson.

When two such powerful criminals begin to fight, the streets of a city can become unsafe for anyone—and the terror reached into the bars, the slum bedrooms, the shops, and the apartments of the wealthy.

This is a powerful novel, as timely as today's headlines, with a punch and a drive that will keep the reader enthralled, and leave him shocked and shaken and remembering what he's experienced for a long time to come.
