by Dr.Wernhervon Braun
Director George C. Marshall Space Flight Center
The nature of flight in space is kaleidoscopic— made up of geography, engineering, physics, chemistry, and medicine all wrapped into one dynamic, rapidly-changing package. As each launching creates new facets in the space-flight picture, fresh discoveries are made by the men on the very threshold of our space frontier.
In his new book, Dr. Wernher von Braun explains this complex and fascinating subject for the public in terms that any reader can understand. He deals with such varied aspects as the countdown, the automatic checkout of rockets, the design of space vehicles, the strange world of zero gravity, tracking spacecraft, manned space stations, repair of space machinery, ferries in space, and many other subjects.
Dr. von Braun devotes a good part of this book to exciting new discoveries and little-known facts concerned with such phases of the space program as safety in space, astronaut survival, moon landings, and travel on planets other than Earth.
There is perhaps no area of man's awareness that has fascinated him as much as outer space. In this century there has been a fantastic drive for all kinds of information about that vast, unexplored world. No man is better equipped to explain this challenging subject than Dr. von Braun.
Born in Wirsitz, Germany, in 1912, WERNHER VON BRAUN earned his Ph.D. in physics at the University of Berlin at the age of twenty-two. He and more than a hundred of his associates were brought to the United States in 1945 from Peenemunde to continue their rocket experiments in Texas. A specialist in rocket design and controls, the development of large liquid fuel rockets, power plants for rocket planes, and guided missiles, Dr. von Braun writes a regular column for Popular Science Monthly on space science and is the author of the highly successful First Men to the Moon.
