THE WHITE DRAGON
A FANTASY OF A TIME WHEN...
On Pern it was said that the dragon was the man. Indeed that was a truth unquestioned. From the moment of Hatching and Impressing, man and dragon were telepathically and emotionally conjoined—immutably bonded for life. So it was, and so it would always be.
But never had there been as close a bonding as the one that existed between the daring and adventurous young Lord Jaxom and his extraordinary white dragon, Ruth. Pure white and incredibly agi le, Ruth possessed remarkable undragonlike qualities. Not only could he communicate with the ever-present fire-lizards and retain in memory things other dragons could not, but he could fly back in time to any when with unfailing accuracy. Ruth was certainly a dragon of many talents, though almost everyone on Pern thought he was a runt who would never amount to anything.
Jaxom, however, knew his dragon was special. He also knew that his life was boring and unrewarding. He was at his wit's end. If he were not yet old enough to be acknowledged as the rightful leader of his Hold, Jaxom thought he should at least be permitted to train Ruth to participate in Pern's periodic dragonflights against the burning silver Threads that fell from the menacing Red Star and threatened to destroy their planet.
But Jaxom and Ruth could not be placed in jeopardy, and so they were forbidden to take any part in the desperate battles at Threadfall. Undaunted, the Weyrmates trained themselves in secret. Disobeying all rules, Jaxom taught Ruth to fly back in time—as well as between— to escape detection. Their i l l icit flights seemed but a minor disobedience, until unexpected events put them in the path of danger and in a position to prevent what would be the biggest disaster of al l : a battle that set dragonrider against dragonrider!
