Principles of Inverter Circuits is a comprehensive and authoritative volume on solid-state inverters. It is the first book to explain in full the fundamental principles and techniques of inverter circuits. The authors progress in a logical, step-by-step sequence from the simplest concepts and circuits to the most advanced techniques and applications. The primary concentration is on SCR inverters, and a major portion of the book is devoted to alternate commutating circuits—the keys to reliable inversion process.
Familiar commutating techniques (line, parallel capacitor, series capacitor, and harmonic commutation) lead to a detailed discussion of recently developed inverter commutation techniques. Procedures for controlling output voltage and improving the waveform are presented, as well as the important applications of inverter principles to D-C circuits. The book concludes with a brief description of some of the equipment that has evolved from the approaches presented in the book.
B. D. Bedford earned his Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering at the University of Texas. Much of his work with General Electric since 1927 has been in the various laboratories developing power rectifier circuits, inverter circuits, and their control equipment. He holds ninety-seven patents in these fields and in magnetic amplifiers. His experience also includes the installation and servicing of many large rectifiers, and the development and testing of both a large inverter for D-C power transmission and a large electronic frequency charger. He is now Senior Electrical Engineer at G.E.'s Advanced Technology Laboratories, Schenectady, New York.
R. G. Hoft received a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering, specializing in Communications, from Iowa State University. His MEE is in Control from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. In 1948 he became an Engineer at General Electric and within seven years became an Engineering Manager. He is now on a leave of absence from G. E. while attending Iowa State to earn his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering.
