THE GARDENER and other poems by JOHN HALL WHEELOCK

JOHN HALL WHEELOCK'S reputation is now so surely established, there is little need to say more of his latest book than that it is composed entirely of new work not previously published in book form. His first collection came out in 1911. The present volume, issued just half a century later, reveals him at the peak of his powers, the culmination of a long discipline. Such poems as "The Gardener," "Song On Reaching Seventy," "The Divine Insect," "Evening Contemplation," attracted widespread attention, here and in England, on their appearance in The Times (London) Literary Supplement and The New Yorker.

Mr. Wheelock's work, unlike that of many of his contemporaries, presents us with a clearly defined personality against the background of a life and of a landscape equally clearly defined. Strong feeling, under strict control, here attains an impassioned serenity.

John Hall Wheelock was born in 1886 on Long Island and has spent most of his summers on its south shore. He receives his education at Harvard and at German universities, and was for some years an editor with a well-known publishing house. His Poems, 1911-1936 was awarded the Golden Rose by the New England Poetry Club in 1936 and, in 1956, his Poems Old 2nd New took the Ridgely Torrence Memorial Award and the Borestone Mountain Poetry Award. An encourager of experimental talent, he has introduced, during the past eight years, in his annual, Poets of Today, prefaced by critical appreciations, twenty-four young American poets hitherto unpublished. He is a Chancellor of the Academy of American Poets and a member of the National Institute of Arts and Letters.
