The Complete Writings of Nathaniel Hawthorne ; Autograph Edition with Portraits, Illustrations, and Facsimiles in Twenty-Two Volumes
Boston: Houghton Mifflin and Company, 1900. Leather Bound. #485 of 500 copies of the Autograph Edition, signed in the first volume by the author's daughter, Rose Hawthorne Lathrop, who provided the introduction, and by the publisher. Aside from that this set is one of the few sets that contains an original Custom House document signed by Nathaniel Hawthorne when he was a customs officer for the United States Government bounded into volume one as well. If that wasn't enough, this set is also one of the few sets out there that contain an original, authentic autograph by the artists that illustrated this limited edition set. Each volume contains a frontispiece which was hand signed, in pencil, by the artist. Some of the artists that signed this set include Jessie Wilcox Smith, Howard Pyle, Childe Hassam, Frank T. Merrill, Frederick McCormick, and others. This is a 3/4 leather bound set with the original owner bookplate affixed onto the front free endpaper for each volume. It is in very good condition with gilt decoration and title at spine and has no markings within the pages.
