Lions and Shadows by Christopher Isherwood

Lions and Shadows is a literary autobiography, the fascinating record of how a young Inan made himself into a writer, The scene is London in the Twenties.

But perhaps it would be more accurate to call Lions and Shadows an autobiographical novel. Although the story is Isherwood's Own, carrying him up to the age of twenty-five, he has given free rein to his remarkable. powers of dramatization and caricature. Isherwood is such' a born storyteller that he seems to have been unable to resist the temptation to improve here and there on the facts. The result is a completely delightful book.

There are reminiscences of London Bohemia, of tutoring inexpensive houses, of a brief experience as a medical student, and sketches of many friends and colleagues— some of them now famous authors—whose disguise the perceptive reader should find it easy to penetrate. Lions and Shadows first appeared in England in 1938, where it was received with enthusiasm. But it has never until now been published in the United States.
