The Silver Pony ; A Story in Pictures by LYND WARD

A boy, particularly a lonely boy, lives in two worlds, one of the limited reality around him, the other a wider world of his imagining and his dreams. This wider world is more exciting and something unexpected is always happening.

In eighty pictures and no words THE SILVER PONY tells the story of such a boy and what happens to him when, with the help of a winged pony, he is able to escape from the little world of his midwestern farm and through a series of adventures come to know the larger realism of the world outside. He learns something about the loneliness of others in their far-off places, and comes to understand what his life has in common with theirs.

Lynd Ward's pictures read as easily as any words. The plot can be followed by anyone —from the very young to the fully adult. Yet these pictures will evoke from each reader a special reaction based on his own experiences and outlook on life. They will serve as stepping stones to finding a very personal story within. This is a work of art that speaks to the deeper levels of man's inner self, and at the same time it carries a small child on the wings of a simple story.

LYND WARD is a distinguished name in the field of book illustration. THE BIGGEST BEAR, which he wrote as well as illustrated, was a winner of the Caldecott Medal. He is renowned as a wood engraver. Harry Abrams, Inc., publisher of art books, has in production a one volume collection of Mr. Ward's early novels without words, the first of which was GOD'S MAN. They have all long been collector's items. Lynd Ward and his author wife, May McNeer, with whom he has often collaborated, live in Cresskill, N. J. and summer in Canada.
