Louise Fitzhugh's first book, HARRIET THE SPY, was published in 1964. The critics at once separated into two vociferous camps. But the children adored Harriet, and the book quickly became a best seller which seems destined for literary immortality.
Miss Fitzhugh was born in Memphis, Tennessee, and has lived in Washing-ton, D.C., France, and Italy. She attended Bard College, the Art Students League, and The Cooper Union. Her paintings were exhibited successfully at the Banfer Gallery in New York in 1963.
In addition to her own two books, Miss Fitzhugh has illustrated SUZUKI BEANE, published in 1961. She lives in New York City hut spends her summers on Long Island at a place called Water Mill.
