Harrius Potter et Philosophi Lapis is part of a wonderful tradition of translating favorite children's classics such as Winnie the Pooh and Paddington Bear, into Latin and will be of interest to all those who are studying the language, whether at school or at a higher level, as well as to fans of Harry Potter.
About the translator: Peter Needham taught Classics at Eton for over thirty years. He has also translated A Bear called Paddington into Latin. Peter lives near Windsor, England.
J. K. (Joanne Kathleen) Rowling has written fiction since she was a child. Born in 1965, she grew up in Chepstow and wrote her first 'book' at the age of six - a story about a rabbit called Rabbit. She studied French and Classics at Exeter University hen moved to Edinburgh - via London and Portugal. In 2000 she was awarded an OBE for services to children's literature.
The idea for Harry Potter occurred to her on the train from Manchester to London and by the time she'd arrived at King's Cross, many of the characters had taken shape. During the next five years, she outlined the plots for each book and began writing the first. Harry Potter and the Philosopher o Stone was published in 1997.
The Harry Potter books are translated into over 50 languages. J. K. Rowling has also written two small volumes which appear as books within the Harry Potter adventures -Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them and Quidditch Through The Ages - in aid of Comic Relief.
