BELOW THE ROOT BY ZILPHA KEATLEY SNYDER

What really lay below the great roots that made a network over the ground of Green-sky? The Ol-zhaan, the religious and governmental leaders of Green-sky, had always said that monsters lived there, imprisoned by the magic root. The Kindar, the people of Green-sky, were not allowed to look at the forest floor let alone venture near. This was possible because they lived in the great grundtrees that rose, with their huge trunks and enormous spreading limbs, high toward the sky. The Kindar moved about by climbing ladders up the great trunks and then, with the aid of their cloth shubas, gliding down and out in the direction they needed to go.

Raamo, at thirteen, had seldom questioned the wisdom of the Ol-zhaan. Yet new experiences, after he learned that he had been chosen to become an Ol-zhaan, made him begin to wonder about some things. And to find others who wondered, too. This led to some surprising discoveries and to dangers different from any Raamo had envisioned. The world of Green-sky was not as he or as other Kindar had thought.

Below the Root is Zilpha Keatley Snyder's first complete fantasy, and it creates a world both like and unlike our own.
