The Americans by Robert Frank ; Introduction by Jack Kerouac
New York : Pantheon Books, 1986. First Pantheon Edition. Hardcover. 174 pages ; b/w photographs. A very good copy with original dust jacket, clean pages, and bright images. No markings within the pages and binding is firm.
For the first time, this edition of The Americans brings back to print Robert Frank's classic series of photographs in a book of the very high quality that the work has always deserved. First published in 1959, with a wry, witty introduction by Jack Kerouac, The Americans was not only Frank's highly personal vision of America. It was also the debut of a style that was to transform conventional methods of photographic observation and have a profound and lasting influence on American photography. This edition was printed in Switzerland by Jean Genoud under the direct supervision of Robert Frank.
"Robert Frank established a new iconography for contemporary America, comprised of bits of bus depots, lunch counters, strip developments, empty spaces, cars, and unknowable faces. This iconography has become a common coin, [and] here in the original the acuity of Frank's own sensibility is alive and relevant." John Szarkowski Director, Department of Photography Museum of Modern Art
"By the '70s it was clear that The Americans represented the most influential, and therefore the most important, work in photography in the preceding twenty or thirty years. There was no longer any doubt that it had turned American photography around." Jno Cook, Afterimage
"The enormous power of Frank's 1950s photo-graphs, which are one of modern art's magnificent achievements, lies in their being at once a social epic and a personal lament.... [They] have become a standard."-Leo Rubinfien, Art in America
Robert Frank was born in Zurich, Switzerland, in 1924. He came to the United States in 1947, and in 1955 and 1956 he traveled around the country on a Guggenheim grant, taking the photographs that were to become this book. The Americans was published in France, in 1958, and the first American edition appeared the following year. Since then Frank has devoted most of his energies to filmmaking. He lives in New York City and Nova Scotia, Canada.
